Check & Connect National Conferences

Engagement strategies • current research • perspectives from experts and practitioners

The Institute on Community Integration at the University of Minnesota, headquarters for the national Check & Connect office, hosts a 2-day national conference every two years on the Minneapolis campus. The aim is to bring together leading experts and practitioners from around the country and overseas to address topics pertaining to student engagement among at-risk youth.

For our first conference in 2015, Check & Connect: Celebrating 25 Years of Student Engagement (1990-2015), we invited speakers to celebrate 25 years of Check & Connect engaging students nationwide. With two keynote speakers, a panel, and 20 breakout sessions, participants examined current models of Check & Connect implementation as well as research in the field of education. You can view video recordings of the keynotes as well as slides from the presentations on our 2015 Conference website.

In 2017, we are focusing more broadly on the topic of student engagement in our conference, Student Engagement Conference 2017: Connection to School, Motivation to Learn. To achieve this, we put out a call for presentation proposals for our numerous breakout sessions. Again, we are offering two keynote speakers, a panel, and we carefully selected 24 breakout sessions for participants to address student engagement more broadly. Tracks include Tools, Leadership, Systemwide Applications, and Research. See 2017 Conference website for more information.

For all of our national conferences, we offer a 1-day Preparation and Implementation Training for those new to Check & Connect the day prior to the conference.
