Beginning in the 2015-2016 school year, Check & Connect is being implemented in the DeKalb County School District, a large urban district within the Atlanta, Georgia metropolitan area. With over 70 Check & Connect mentors in elementary, middle, and high schools, referred students will be supported in establishing positive habits from an early age in attendance, behavior, and academics. We are looking forward to seeing the impact on student outcomes with this widespread implementation.
Scope: As of the 2016-2017 school year, Check & Connect is implemented in 43 schools — 11 elementary schools, 18 middle schools, and 14 high schools. There are 39 full-time dedicated mentors and 35 existing staff mentors serving a total of 2,000 students. Existing staff include teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, and athletic coaches.
Student population and grades served: Students in grades 1 - 10, in both general education and special education, and who are identified as “at risk” are being served by Check & Connect.
Referral criteria: Students are referred based upon attendance, behavior, and academic data from the previous school year.
Outcomes: Within the first year of implementation, there has been a decrease in the number of suspensions for targeted students. Additionally, the number of courses passed have increased in middle and high schools. We hope to share more data in the future after a full two years of implementation.
