This study was part of a randomized control trial examining the efficacy of Check & Connect on students’ cognitive/affective, behavioral, and academic engagement in five high schools in a large school district. The purpose of the study presented here was to understand students’ perceptions of how Check & Connect participation may or may not have contributed to their current school progression status, and what about Check & Connect, in particular, was helpful. Participants represented two distinct groups: students receiving the intervention and mentors implementing the intervention. The research team used a stratified sampling procedure to select students in the treatment condition who were identified as “high” and “low” achieving at the end of the C&C intervention. Students were randomly selected from the top and bottom 20 rankings, with the goal of interviewing ten to 30 students total. Several themes were identified, which will be reported in this presentation.
