It’s Elementary My Dear Watson

How does Check & Connect benefit elementary students? I am currently in the process of finding out. Sumner Elementary in Austin, Minnesota has 300 students with 27 accepted into the Check & Connect program (trust me, many more qualified). Our Check & Connect team continued to use the guidelines we learned from national Check & Connect trainer Joseph Angaran until we determined the first, second, third, and fourth grade students at greatest risk of not graduating from high school. I am collecting data from the 2016-2017 school year specifically in regards to individual student monthly totals of attendance, tardiness, and behavior. This data is being compared to the monthly totals of the 2015-2016 school year, the year prior to the introduction of Check & Connect at Sumner. I am also comparing and contrasting SCANTRON reading data — another focus of our family mentoring — using the two school years mentioned above. This presentation will walk you through the process of how an elementary school can introduce the program to families, implement the program using Basic and Intensive Mentoring, and analyze data to evaluate the effectiveness of Check & Connect at the elementary level.

Deborah Cook

This is Ms. Cook's twenty-seventh year in education. Throughout her career, she has taught third, fourth, fifth, and sixth graders, with much of her experience in the fourth-grade classroom. These experiences have provided Ms. Cook the opportunities to develop skills in the areas of co-teaching, parallel teaching, and collaborative teaching. For the past two years Sumner Elementary’s principal, Sheila Berger, was feverishly researching programs to engage students and their families. She was seeking a data driven, research-based program that recognizes that the importance of students as learners begins with regular attendance as well as supporting, teaching, and guiding students and their families socially, emotionally, and academically. Sheila Berger discovered Check & Connect, which Deborah Cook now coordinates at the elementary school level.
